Phobia

Are you scared to take your children to a bird park. Do you quake at the thought of the reptile enclosure at the zoo? Have you always wanted to swim with your family but are just too scared to enter the water? These are common phobias limiting the experiences of life.

Phobias often begin from one traumatic experience, often from childhood. Some phobias are learned from a parent or sibling, for example the child learns to be terrified of thunder because its mother demonstrated her fear of storms.

A phobia is an intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared stimulus. When the fear is beyond one's control, and if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.

Perhaps a very large dog chased or barked at a small child, causing terror and so a dislike of dogs became the norm, which when reinforced became a phobia.

A phobia is a demonstration of just how quick the mind is, and how it works to protect you. One scary experience lasting a few moments and you learn immediately that this is an experience to be wary of, you take it on board, hey presto a phobia is born! Your mind will then guide you to react to this situation to protect yourself. Amazing isn’t it how quickly these things can be programmed in.
